Jo Melville. legacy mural

Researchers & committee members required.

Background

The community has requested that we move forward with plans for a legacy mural for Jo Melville.
At a recent gathering celebrating the life of Jo Melville at Metal on the 20th Oct 2024, Michelle Passfield presented the idea & introduced artist Scott Irving. (Brave_Arts)

Scott said he'd be honoured to be 'lead artist' but added.
"I'd be thrilled to support a team to apply the artwork, but organising this needs more than just me."

Its going to needs a few of us in partnership to make it happen. Possibly a small committee if we go down the kickstarter or go-fund-me route.

Timeline:

Which comes first, securing site permissions or the fundraising!

it was suggested that site permission can be notoriously difficult to obtain, so that's where we should start.
"Last thing we want to do is compromise on an inadequate or inappropriate site.  It has to be super special, like the end of terrace size pieces weve had painted recently in the area".

When the project was first floated in 2023 Scott made enquiries regarding support from Southend City jam organisers & got nowhere fast with gate keepers in Southend.
But Westcliff seemed keen.
Scott Said " It's dealing with the politics within the council and clauses around permissions  legalities, territories. Property owners etc"

However we've been told it doesn't have to be a minefield so we are hoping for some support from within local government to ensure this happens soon.

Next Steps:
Establish partners / form committee :

  • Secure an appropriate wall/place for the legacy mural
Apply for necessary permits and secure permissions.
  • Develop a budget and a timeline.
  • Engage with local artists, community members & Jo's family for design decisions
  • Complete mural painting
  • Organize launch & celebration event / press release.

Project overview

The mural will be painted in a prominent public location within the community and it will depict Jo.

The project is envisioned as a community-driven effort that will bring together diverse skill sets of people who had their lives touched by Jo.
It will serve as a celebration of her legacy, while also fostering community pride.

The proposed committee/partnership will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of this project, from fundraising and obtaining site permissions to mural application.

This page serves as a statement of intent & a formal call to establish partners tasked with planning, and production of a public mural within our community ‘Westcliff’.

Any committee or partnership will be responsible for making key decisions related to:

  • Insuring that any artwork appropriately honours Jo and resonates with the community’s values.

  • Fundraising to cover all associated costs: Securing financial resources to support the project’s completion.

  • Negotiations and Approvals: Engaging with property owners, council planning agents, and relevant authorities to negotiate a site for the public art installation. This includes navigating any zoning/conservation regulations, permits, or other legal considerations.
